Dean sat at the table across from Olin. The sun had started to set, but Kat was still outside. The property had enough cameras for them to easily spot where she was, and no doubt she needed some time alone.
It had been three days there together, and theyâd all finally fallen into a routine. Bradley worked the most, up early and working until dinner, but he never failed to arrive back at the house with a sense of contentment.
Dean understood that. It was what his job did for him as well. It gave him a sense of worth, a feeling that he had a place in a hectic and ever moving world.
Heâd had to push off some of his own cases to his colleagues, but most of it heâd been able to work remotely with. It let him stay there with Kat and the others for as long as he needed to.
âAnything new?â Dean asked.
Olin shook his head. âNewest body is like the others. Jerry is covering his ass well.â
âWhy? We already have him dead to rights on abducting Ell and Kat. Why be so careful now?â
âBecause the manpower used to track down some gang leader who kidnapped two women but didnât kill them is a lot different from the heat that comes down on a serial killer. If he can keep his nose clean on these charges, he wonât get found so fast.â
Dean sighed, the answer expected but still frustrating. They knew exactly who was behind this, but without knowing where he was, without proof, there wasnât much they could do.
âHowâs Kat doing?â Dean asked.
âAs well as can be expected. The girl is resilient.â
âThat she is. Damn shame that she needs to be.â
Olin nodded as if he agreed. Knowing someone was tough was one thing, but no doubt theyâd both rather she didnât have to go through this all.
âAbout you and herâ¦â
âStop that right there,â Olin said when Dean trailed off. âThere is no she and I.â
âSo you move in with every case you have?â Dean offered a grin. âOr actually, move in with every ex-case you have?â
Olin averted his gaze, as if to hide whatever he was thinking. Fine with Deanâall his time learning to read people made it a fun game for him.
âI know Katâs a lot, but that look in your face says you donât mind it much,â Dean said.
âWhy are you even asking? Clearly, youâre interested, so it seems pretty stupid to be shoving other men onto her.â
Dean waved off the question. âIâm not a jealous man. Besides, Katâs enough trouble that she needs a few men to keep her in check.â
And it wasnât like Dean was the staying type, no matter how much Kat made him wish he were. Just remembering how sheâd fit into his arms when theyâd fallen asleep made his chest ache, made him want to try that again even if he knew it was a pointless wish.
Dean kept things casual for good reasonâno reason to go fucking that up now.
